Notes on retreats, stays, and celebrations at a private Kentucky estate

Welcome to The Estate Edit. Mallard Hall Estate is a private, exclusive-use estate just

outside Louisville, and its story is one of revival, patience, and a great deal of care. Built in the late 18th century and lovingly restored, the house brings together its original character and the comforts of modern living, in a setting that feels less like a venue and more like a home.

Through Many Hands (and a Narrow Escape)

The estate's story likely begins with John Hume's 1,000-acre pre-emption, an early settler's land claim, in the late 1700s. The original farmhouse was built in 1790. In 1980 the Greenberg family expanded the home and ran a well-regarded Saddlebred farm on the property.

The house as it stands today was very nearly lost. When our founder, Annette Vitale, walked through a cash-only open house, she made an offer along with a personal letter explaining her hope to preserve the home and return it to its original grandeur. Her offer was accepted within 24 hours, and the house was spared from three developers who had planned to replace it with a subdivision.

Restored by Hand

Over four years, with Annette serving as her own general contractor and her family working alongside her, Mallard Hall Estate was brought back to life. Her daughter helped build the outdoor stone hearth, and her son helped install the fireplace in the lower-level speakeasy. The goal throughout was to keep the soul of the original architecture while making the house truly comfortable to live in.

History shows up everywhere you look: 200-year-old hand-hewn beams in the grand

corridor, original windows etched with Saddlebreds, and brick from the old patio that now lines the speakeasy and bourbon bar. Alongside them are the quieter comforts that make a stay easy, like heated floors, a sauna, an elevator, sound throughout the house, and a saltwater pool and spa. The house sits among green pastures beside a 2-acre pond that the local ducks have claimed as their own. They are the reason for our name.

Our Place on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®

We are proud to be an official Kentucky Bourbon Trail® partner, one of a select group of

destinations that add hospitality and history to the Trail experience. Guests can spend their days at the Trail's member distilleries and come home in the evening to a quiet, private estate.

The restoration has been featured in USA TODAY's Luxury Homes edition (2024), Kentucky Homes and Gardens ("A Blend of Modern Elegance and Timeless Luxury"), and TOPS Louisville, April 2024 ("A Stunning Estate Brought to Life").

What You Will Find Here

Today Mallard Hall is reserved for a select few: executive teams in search of focus, guests seeking a truly private stay, and couples planning a wedding weekend unlike any other. Our weddings are exclusive by design. The couple and their closest family and friends stay on the estate for the entire weekend, and we host only one celebration at a time, so every detail belongs to them.

The Estate Edit is where we share what it takes to do each of these beautifully. Here you will find:

  • The art of the executive retreat, and what makes an offsite truly productive

  • Why a private estate offers what even the finest hotel cannot

  • The weekend wedding, from the rehearsal dinner to the farewell brunch

  • Hosting a fundraiser with grace and purpose
